The dark theme is not a black theme. One of the main concerns in the Dark theme is contrast so that visual elements have separation and the text is easy to read. Most designers would think that using black would be the optimal way to achieve strong contrast. However, it is best not to use pure black (# 000000) for the background or surface color. Google’s Dark Theme in Material Design recommends using dark gray (# 121212) as the dark theme’s background color. This tends to create a darker, nicer look.

The coloring of each level requires care. Preferably no more than four or five levels. Designers need to take into account the contrast of high-depth (brighter) text. If the background color is not dark enough to provide a contrast level of at least 15.8:1 between white text and the surface, the text contrast should be lighter than the standard 4.5:1. Design with contrast check using the contrast tool on the website webaim. In some cases, it’s best to specify an element’s text color as true black (# 000000) in the design system to achieve good contrast against a light gray background.
